It’s surrounded by a connective tissue sheath called the retinaculum, akin to Saran Wrap, gently holding these structures in place. Overuse, such as excessive mouse usage or carrying heavy bags, can lead to constriction of the retinaculum, putting pressure on tendons and nerves and causing pain and numbness in the hand. While numbness can also stem from neck issues, we’re focusing on carpal tunnel syndrome in chiropractic care. Soft tissue work, like transverse friction massage, can be employed to loosen the retinaculum and free up bound tissues. It’s crucial not to resort to cutting the retinaculum immediately, as this can lead to scar tissue formation, often causing more problems. Surgery should be reserved for exceptional cases, as more often than not, it’s unnecessary and not the best first option.
